Ian Gillan Longtime Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan helped the band become the unstoppable force they were in the 1970s. Following the departure of Rod Evans after the band made a conscious decision to get heavier, Gillan was selected as his replacement and the band started their rock domination. Gillan’s gruff voice and ability to belt out some high screams like in “Child in Time” also kick-started what would become the definition of heavy metal vocals. Loudwire
