Bon Scott wrote AC/DC’s Back in Black
The February 1980 death of AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott — and his subsequent replacement by Brian Johnson — left many fans dismayed about the future of their favorite Australian rockers. Of course, Johnson’s debut LP, Back in Black, was a huge success and proved that the group could carry on just fine. Maybe that was because Scott — who has no official writing credits on the release — actually penned a fair amount of it, according to some theorists. In his book Bon: The Last Highway, Jesse Fink alleges that Scott came up with the original lyrics for “You Shook Me All Night Long” (which were then altered by Johnson and guitarist brothers Angus and Malcolm Young). AC/DC aficionados have also implied that Scott came up with “Have a Drink on Me,” as well as that early, bootleg versions of four tunes feature Scott’s vocals. There’s also the logical conclusion that since Scott died a mere two months before they started recording Back in Black, he must’ve left something (in a notebook that his family took) for the remaining members to use.
