Rockers Whose Bands Tried to Erase Them - Mitch Malloy
Mitch Malloy found out he wasn't going to take over for Sammy Hagar in Van Halen while watching TV in the mid '90s. He says they had even started working on new music together before David Lee Roth famously joined Van Halen onstage during MTV's Video Music Awards – his first appearance since leaving in 1985. "I was, like, 'What?' My jaw just dropped," Malloy said in the documentary Van Halen's Lost Boy. Malloy was told that MTV had engineered the move as a stunt, and that Roth was not officially back as a member. Still, Malloy clearly felt like he had been stabbed in the back. "When I saw Dave come out with them, that was it for me. It was over," he said. "This can't work for me." Malloy went back to his solo career, and has worked as a mixer and mastering engineer with Taylor Swift, Kenny Loggins and others. Van Halen continue to studiously ignore him.
