Did Jim Morrison Really Break on Through to the Other Side?
On record, the late Doors vocalist joined the “27 Club” on July 3, 1971, when his partner, Pamela Courson, found him dead in the bathtub of her Paris apartment. Although some eyewitnesses speculate that he died from a heroin overdose — and no autopsy was performed — the official cause of death was heart failure. However, people have still managed to formulate several more intriguing alternative explanations. According to English singer Marianne Faithful, Morrison was killed by her then-boyfriend, drug dealer Jean de Breiteuil; others have suggested that he died in the toilet stall of a nightclub (and then was moved to Courson’s bathtub so that the establishment could avoid accountability). Even Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek got in on the act by proposing that Morrison never died at all. Many fans have supported that outcome by saying that they’ve seen him in various American cities, as well as in Australia and Tibet, reciting poetry and maintaining his Lizard King mystique.
