Led Zeppelin Call It Quits After the Loss of a Member Led Zeppelin were arguably the biggest rock band in the world throughout the 1970s. After eight studio albums together — the final being 1979’s In Through the Out Door, their career was cut short. While rehearsing to head out on tour in support of the record in September of 1980, drummer John Bonham tragically died after an alcohol binge. He was 32 years old. Known to many as one of the greatest drummers in rock ’n’ roll history, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin — Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones — chose to disband. “We wish it to be known, that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were,” they wrote in a press release. The members have reunited here and there since Bonzo’s death, and Page and Plant even had a stint as an eponymous band in the ‘90s. But, they did not create new work together as Led Zeppelin.
